SciGen Limited
Biotechnology company SciGen was established in Singapore in 1988 and has been listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX code SIE) since 2002. SciGen sells recombinant human insulin under the trade name SciLin in Southeast Asia, Australia and Oceania (excluding Japan) under licence from Savient Pharmaceuticals Inc. (formerly known as Bio-Technology General Corp.). The company manufactures and sells licensed biotechnological products, including a recombinant human growth hormone under the trade name SciTropin and a hepatitis B vaccine under the trade name Sci-B-Vac.
SciGen has offices in Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Singapore, South Korea, Philippines, USA and Vietnam.
BIOTON S.A. holds 90.54% of the share capital of SciGen.
Subsidiary companies of SciGen Ltd:
- SciGen Israel Ltd – a wholly-owned subsidiary established in 2005 and based in Rehovot, Israel. SciGen Israel was set up to manufacture the active substance and finished forms of SciGen’s proprietary hepatitis B vaccine (Sci-B-Vac). SciGen will be marketing Sci-B-Vac all over the world under licence from Bio-Technology General Corp.
- SciGen India Pvt Ltd – SciGen acquired 100% shares of an Indian company in 2006. The new facility in Pune, India manufactures recombinant human insulin and other biotechnology products in accordance with European and American standards.
- SciGen Australia Pty Ltd – a company established by SciGen in Sydney for the wholesale of biotechnological products.
- SciGen Korea Ltd – a company established by SciGen to sell biotechnological products.
- H.S.B.B.C. - BIOTON S.A., SciGen Ltd. and Hefei Life Science Park Investment & Development Co. established a joint venture under the business name Hefei-SciGen-Bioton Biopharmaceutical Company Ltd. in Hefei (Anhui province), China in July 2006. The purpose of the joint venture is to manufacture finished forms of recombinant human insulin and Type B hepatitis vaccine, and to sell these products in China. SciGen Ltd. owns 51% of the share capital of the joint venture company and BIOTON S.A. owns 24%.
BioPartners Holdings AG
A Swiss based company established in 2000 which mainly specialises in developing innovative biotechnological pharmaceuticals using recombinant DNA technologies. The company was the second to be granted marketing authorisation for a biosimilar drug by the EMEA for the human growth hormone Valtropin. The distribution rights for this product cover all of Europe, including the Commonwealth of Independent States, Japan, Australia and some Asian countries.
Other products include:
- A sustained release human growth hormone, this product is a breakthrough in growth hormone therapy because it allows weekly instead of daily injections. The distribution rights of Valtropin SR cover all of Europe, including the Commonwealth of Independent States, Japan, Australia and some Asian countries.
- Interferon Beta, for the treatment of multiple sclerosis is sold under the trade name Biferonex with worldwide distribution rights.
- Ribavirin, for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C in combination with interferon alpha is sold under the trade name Ravanex with worldwide distribution rights.
BIOTON S.A. purchased 100% of the shares in BioPartners in March 2007.
Fisiopharma S.R.L.
A company established in 1989 to produce pharmaceutical injectors, predominantly for hospitals and pharmacies. The company’s production facilities meet GMP requirements and its longstanding manufacturing experience and advanced technology assist in preparing registrations in CTD format and completing turn key projects. The company’s products are sold in the European Union, Eastern Europe and the Far East.
Pharmatex Italia S.R.L.
Pharmatex Italia S.R.L. was established in 1977 and is well-known for distributing bulk active ingredients (API). The company was able to enter the finished and generic products markets through its cooperation with Fisiopharma S.R.L. Close collaboration between the two companies ensures that the entire manufacturing process, from raw material supply to finished product delivery, is accurately controlled and executed in accordance with international standards.
ZAO BIOTON WOSTOK
ZAO BIOTON WOSTOK was incorporated by BIOTON S.A. and its Russian partners to produce and sell human insulin on the Russian market. The new production plant in the town of Orel manufactures ready made forms of biotechnological products for the Russian market, other markets of the former USSR and, potentially, other Asian markets. In May 2005, BIOTON WOSTOK successfully registered a human insulin substance in Russia and ready made forms of recombinant human insulin were registered in September 2006. All Gensulin forms granted marketing approval were entered on the federal list of reimbursed drugs in May 2007. BIOTON S.A. has a 38% stake in BIOTON WOSTOK.
M.J. BIOTON LIFE SCIENCES LTD
This is a joint-venture to manufacture and distribute pharmaceuticals and biotechnological products, especially recombinant human insulin. The joint-venture will give Bioton access to products at advanced stages of development and registration. There may additionally be mutual synergies from sharing production infrastructure and existing distribution networks. Finalising the transaction to set up the M.J. Bioton Life Sciences Ltd joint-venture, in which BIOTON has a 50% stake, was in February 2008.
Medipolis GMP- Oulu is a company specialising in microbiogical fermentation in accordance with GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) requirements and in developing and producing products for biotechnological companies. The company focuses on the small-scale manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) for clinical and toxicological purposes (these include therapeutic proteins, enzymes, therapeutic injections and DNA plasmids). Medipolis owns a production plant manufacturing GMP recombinant therapeutic protein and other biological medicinal products.
M.J. Biopharm PVT is a company that produces high-quality specialist pharmaceuticals, including finished products and active ingredients, for both the domestic and export markets. The company produces animal and recombinant human insulin, cephalosporins for injective administration, other drugs (in the form of tablets, capsules and injections) used in diabetology and cardiology, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) and antibiotics. M.J. Biopharm PVT has registered its insulin in 20 countries and has a suitable marketing and distribution structure in place in those countries. Cardiology and anti-inflammatory products are currently undergoing registration procedures in Russia, Europe, Asia and Africa.
- Marvel Life Sciences India – the company’s operations are connected with obtaining appropriate registration licences for insulin for Russia, Kazakhstan and Moldova.
ZAO INDAR
ZAO INDAR is Ukraine’s largest insulin producer. It operates a plant in Kiev which produces humanised insulin and ready-made forms comprising inserts and vials. BIOTON S.A. has a 29.29% stake in Indar following the acquisition of Cyprus-based companies Mindar Holdings Ltd. (21.13% stake in Indar) and Germonta Holdings Ltd. (8.16% stake in Indar).
